Soap nuts

Today I am expecting delivery of some soap nuts I purchased from Earth Conscious Mum and Bub. Soap nuts (or soapnuts) are a berry which contain about 12% saponin, which is a natural detergent. You use them for washing clothes, among other things. You put them in a little wash bag and use 6-8 nuts per wash, and they can be reused about four times. The Soap in a Nutshell website reckons it costs around 9c a wash when using soap nuts. Cheap AND chemical free – I’m looking forward to seeing how effective they are on my household’s washing!

I might also have a go at using them as shampoo.

How did they go? I have been wanting soapnuts for ages but still haven’t ordered any.

They worked fine! I was sniffing all the clothes as I pulled them out, smelling under the armpits etc. to see if the soap nuts really did their job lol! There is a procedure for making a liquid out of the nuts which can be used for clothes washing also, and I think that works out even more economically (if my calculations are correct). I will make a batch of liquid over the weekend and try it with more clothes as well as in my hair for shampoo.

Did you make some liquid? How did it go?

Yep! I think I prefer the liquid for washing clothes with. It was not so great for shampooing my hair, though! Very runny/watery and doesn’t lather. I know that things don’t need to lather to get clean, but it just seemed a bit odd!

    Awesome! 🙂
