The 5% Loop Hole

We tend to think that we are advanced and civilised in Australia, that we are protected by regulations and laws… specifically, that food manufacturers must list the ingredients on their product packaging in order of quantity. Unfortunately, there is a tricky little loop hole.

Many product ingredients contain other ingredients.  For example, potato chips may be made of potatoes, oil and salt. The oil may contain other (undesirable) ingredients, like chemical antioxidants.  If an ingredient comprises less than 5% of the whole product, then manufacturers are not legally required to disclose what makes up that ingredient!

This enables food manufacturers to sneakily include inferior ingredients and chemicals without the consumer knowing.  This is deceptive and wrong.
