When Boy Wonder turned two I put on a morning tea for him and invited family over. He has enough cousins, Aunties and Uncles that we didn’t invite friends, there wouldn’t have been room!
Most birthday celebrations for children involve fairy bread, soft drink, cordial, cupcakes, lollies, potato chips and a whole lot of things which come in packets. All I can see when I look at those foods is the artificial colours, additives, preservatives, refined sugar and refined flour. I wouldn’t feed that to anyone, especially not people I love.
But, being a party, people still expect party food. I found it little effort at all to put on a spread that was impressive, delicious and didn’t make anyone feel that they were missing out on a party experience.

A fruit rainbow:
Vegan cake pops made with spelt flour (well, the cake part was vegan, they were then dipped in dark chocolate). The sprinkles are made with natural food dyes. I enlisted two of my nieces to make these when I was looking after them a few days before the party, and then froze them until party day.

And a lion cake for the animal-obsessed birthday boy. You could not tell that it was sugar free or vegan! The food colours were natural (Hoppers brand).
The only drink on offer was 100% grape juice, watered down a little. Since then (his party was early December), I’ve discovered Pinterest and a gazillion amazing new ideas! Look out birthday party age 3!
I purchased a book a few years ago called Additive Free Kids Parties, but the recipes are still mostly junk food full of refined sugar and flour, they just don’t have additives. The book does have great ideas for making your own natural food dyes though. I’d love to know any great ideas for party food that you have tried and had success with!
